1864 – The Sea Captain’s House is a tiny hotel, with only three suites. The listed property, built in 1864 by a prosperous ship-owning family, is one of the few historic mansions on the cliff that withstood the 1956 earthquake without as much as a scratch. It was bought a few years ago by US born Tony Mosiman, who, after a thorough renovation, furnished it with lovely antiques and locally handcrafted items. In the process, he was particularly careful to not add any luxury at the expense of character. As a result, the house has become the perfect low-key luxury antidote to the many flashy hotels that increasingly claim space on the caldera, and it is one of the very few places that manage to combine impeccable service and great comfort with a homey, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The two-storey mansion is partly caved into the cliff. Its façade is a combination of a renaissance-inspired upper level, made out of dark, volcanic stone, and a more traditional island style lower level, washed in a creamy colour. The interiors are a blend of the characteristic elements of Cycladic cave-houses and of 19th century mansions. The wide plank floors are quite rare for Santorini (you only find these in the mansions built by rich sea captains who brought the wood on their boats) and the cross-vaulted ceilings, while more typical for the island, are among the highest found in Oia. On the upper level of the house are two double suites (the Venetian Suite and the Sailing Sea Suite), both enjoying great views. On the lower level, next to a shared living room and library, is the Captain’s Suite (with space for up to five people), which used to be the reception/party room in the heydays of the captain’s family. Although you don’t get the same view here, they space is absolutely impressive – its cathedral ceilings are close to six metres high.
