Online Booking for hotel: Argentikon
The Argentikon in the Kambos area in Chios dates back to 1550, when the Genoese Argenti family built a small palazzo as a summer residence. For hundreds of years the property went from father to son, until a few years ago when the estate entered a new stage in its historical journey, opening its doors as a “luxury suites” hotel. Hotel is maybe not the best word to use; it is, rather, an exquisite hideout offering privacy and tranquillity.
The luxurious suites are spread over five different buildings. Furnished entirely with precious antiques, they have nothing in common with ‘ordinary’ hotel suites, but feel more like guest suites in a royal palace. The décor is overwhelming and uncompromising; the only modern elements are the amenities. The two suites in the palazzo as well as the so-called Kambos Suite are probably the most majestic of all; those in the Castle of the River are the most homely; and the suites in the xystra house (xystra is a local technique whereby walls are scratched in white and grey geometric patterns) have a more charming side to them. Every suite has a sitting room, one to three bedrooms, and one or more bathrooms (some with Jacuzzi).
The suites may be absolutely impressive indeed, but so are the gardens. Winding pathways lead past rose gardens, shady sitting corners, oleander and cypress trees, old marble statues and columns, carefully maintained hedges, pebble-mosaic terraces, marble cisterns and wells with large wooden water wheels, and myriads of fruit trees. And perhaps the most attractive spot of all is the swimming pool, a small compromise in terms of historic authenticity, but one that is absolutely worth it.
Needless to say, service at the Argentikon is impeccable. The staff has only one objective, and that is to spoil you. The elegant restaurant offers some of the finest Mediterranean cuisine. Meals are prepared with a combination of fresh ingredients from the estate (and the sea) and delicacies imported from all over the world.
