Makrinitsa is one of the most beautiful villages of Pelion. It enjoys sweeping views of Volos and the Pagasitikos Gulf and is often nicknamed the balcony of Pelion. Arhondiko Pandora is quietly located at the bottom of the village, just over an (uphill) five-minute walk away from the main village square. The typical Pelion-style mansion was built in 1859 for the mayor of Makrinitsa and his family. When architect Maria Diamond bought it in 1982, it was in such a state of disrepair that it looked as if only the outside walls could be preserved. But Maria knew she could do better than that, and with a lot of hard work (it took her over five years!) she managed to bring the building back to its old glory and turn it into one of the area's most beautiful places to stay.
After Arhondiko Pandora opened as a hotel, it soon became a favourite among Greek politicians and foreign diplomats, not surprisingly because it is among the most comfortable and stylish hotels in Pelion. The seven bedrooms and suites are elegantly appointed in a warm and traditional style. One of the suites has its own sitting room with a fireplace. On the ground floor is a cosy sitting room, with traditional coaches flanking the fireplace. During the winter a breakfast of fresh and homemade products is served in an equally cosy dining room, but as soon as the weather gets warmer it will be brought to you in the garden. An exceptional spot!
