Arhondiko Vogiatzopoulou was built almost a century ago by a family from Volos who used it as their summer home for 30 years. It is in Agios Georgios, the first in a string of villages built along the Western side of Mount Pelion, overlooking the Gulf of Pagasitikos. Agios Georgios is a quiet village with old houses scattered on the mountain side, a small village square shaded by an immense plane tree, one tiny shop and just a few simple tavernas.
Some ten years ago, Miltos Spanos, the grandson of the original owner of the mansion, and his wife Mary started a (much needed) renovation of the house with the idea to pick up again the family tradition of spending summers in Agios Georgios. When the work was nearing its end, they began to wonder what they were actually going to do with all the space in the house: 8 bedrooms seemed rather big for them and their two grown-up children. So the plans – and much of the layout of the house – were changed, and in the fall of 2004 they opened it as a guesthouse.
Mary took care of most of the decoration of the mansion and opted for a traditional-meets-contemporary style. She chose imaginative spring-like colour schemes in the flower-themed bedrooms and then furnished them with a combination of antiques and modern pieces. The rooms are on the small side but have quite a luxurious feel (hydro massage in most showers, bathrobes, slippers, great duvets, etc.) and most have a sweeping view over the sea. On the ground floor there are three cosy sitting rooms and when the sun is out you will find several lovely little corners to sit out in the garden.
So the idea of quiet summers in Agios Georgios never materialised for the Miltos family. Mary now spends a lot of her time running the guesthouse, and during weekends and holidays she is joined by her husband and children who help her take care of the guests. Breakfast is something Mary can be particularly proud of: you will find a table spread with home-made cheese or spinach pies, apple (or other wonderful) cake, seasonal fruits and freshly squeezed orange. During the day Mary also enjoys preparing little bites for her guests, and if you get inspired by her delicious cooking, you are free to use the kitchen yourself as well.

The Arhondiko Vogiatzopoulou was great. We were terribly sorry when we had to leave. It was just what we wanted and needed.
