In the north of Greece, close to the Bulgarian border, there are some spectacularly beautiful areas that, despite everything they offer – hills and mountains, rivers and lakes, forests and wildlife – have remained almost entirely untouched by tourism. This is not really surprising: this part of Greece is a long way to go to and, maybe even more importantly, you don’t find great places to stay. Why bother driving so far if you end up spending the night in a place that makes you wish you were home?
Often, however, all it takes to put an area on the map is an attractive hotel. The recently opened Hotel Granitis has all the potential to do just that for Kato Nevrokopi in the province of Drama. Whether you’ve spent your day on the slopes of the nearby ski center, walking on the mountain tracks or kayaking on the lakes of the Nestos river, Hotel Granitis is a great place to recuperate afterwards.
The stone building sits at the edge of the village Granitis, from where it enjoys magnificent views over the mountains. Inside, the tone is set by stone, wood and warm colours, while high ceilings, large windows and plenty of space (the main floor is essentially one large room opening up to a veranda) create a pleasantly airy ambience. Bedrooms, each with its own balcony or terrace, are not excessively decorated, but they are cosy, spacious, and most of all, very comfortable (excellent heating system for the winter and impeccable marble bathrooms). And finally, a very friendly and attentive service is also part of a package that makes the extra kilometres driving to get to Granitis absolutely worth it.

How to get there
From Drama, follow signs for Kato Nevrokopi. After about 30 km you pass through Granitis, where you will see a sign for the hotel.

Granitis is not a place to just sit still. Put on your walking shoes and explore the mountain tracks, or hop into your car to discover the nearby Falakro Ski Resort, the caves of Aggitis, and the stunning lakes of the Nestos River.
