Online Booking for hotel: Heliophos
With its whitewashed cave-house villages poised on volcanic cliffs, exhilarating views over an endless expanse of blue sky and sea, and breathtaking sunsets, the caldera of Santorini is such an amazingly beautiful spot. It has only one problem: people come from all over the world to see it, and it gets crowded. But just behind one of the caldera villages, Oia, there is another little village where the tourists don’t come; where you hear birds, roosters, church bells and children’s voices instead of music from bars and “oh, it is so beautiful” in at least fifteen different languages. It is called Foinikia, and even though it is barely ten minutes walk from the caldera, it seems like a world apart from it.
This is the setting of Heliophos, an utterly charming complex of restored cave dwellings with arched ceilings dug into the rock, and a few recently added houses built in the more cubic Cycladic tradition. Their interiors are done in the simple, local style, but furnished and decorated with heaps of artistic flair. Owner Sophia Adamopoulou is a passionate traveller, who over the years created a stunning collection of old bits and pieces from all over the world, and an eclectic mix of furniture, objects and artwork give the houses a distinctive, but not overwhelming, exotic touch.
Heliophos is not for people who come for a quick fix of breathtaking views, candlelit dinners and a bit of after-dinner fun. It is especially appreciated by those who stay a little longer on the island and use Heliophos as a base from where they explore the villages on the caldera, the island’s walking paths and the multi-coloured beaches. You should certainly go to Ammoudi Bay (at the very end of the Caldera) for a meal by the sea (there is a path going down); try Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna of Dimitris and (American) Joyce - it is Greece at its very best!
It is only fair to say that there is nothing like Heliophos on Santorini. The combination of beautifully decorated houses, perfect quiet, the totally unspoilt location (with a sea view!), the extremely warm and personal welcome you get from Sophia and the very reasonable prices make it simply unique.
