Up in the mountains of the northern Peloponnese, in the village of Trikala, there is a hotel that a lot of people just keep coming back to. It consists of two stone houses that were built by a couple living in Athens with the idea to spend weekends and have friends over. As it turned out, they enjoyed having guests so much that they eventually turned the place into a small hotel.
Helydorea has a truly pleasant and welcoming feel to it. When you arrive, you are offered a drink in the sitting room, a cosy space with wooden tables and chairs, and a sitting corner by the fireplace. You will then be taken to your room in the house or to a suite in the garden house. Each one is different, but they are all done in an attractive country style with wood or stone-paved floors, bare stone walls, built-in and antique brass beds, a working fireplace in some, and cute little bathrooms. The suites and loft rooms are ideal for families. Most rooms have breathtaking views over the mountains; some also have a balcony.
The hotel does not have a real restaurant, but in the evening there usually is a meal for hotel guests. There is no menu; you just get a simple, hearty home-cooked meal. At breakfast you have a wider choice. You can help yourself to whatever you like: fruits and cereals if you’re in a healthy mood, eggs and bacon if you are the hungry type, or chocolate croissants and cakes if you have a sweet tooth.
Helydorea is popular as a winter weekend destination (especially now that there is a miniature ski resort... with one lift!), but is also a wonderful place other times of the year, when you will enjoy the quiet and beauty of the area even more, and you can go for great walks.
