Ilion
Just perfect : It is quirky and fun, great for a romantic escape!
Less so : The décor is definitely not everybody*s cup of tea. Breakfast could be better.

Tucked away in a narrow street in the historic part of Nafplio, the seaside town that served as the first capital of modern Greece, there is a small hotel that is truly one of a kind. It opened in 1999 with only four rooms, but barely two years later the owners, Themis and Mimi Papaioannou, finished restoring a second, centuries-old building adding several more bedrooms, as well as a sitting and breakfast room.
The interiors of Hotel Ilion are absolutely remarkable. Happily ignoring current trends of stylish minimalism in interior decoration, Mimi simply went for the opposite and appointed her hotel in an extravagantly romantic style. In each bedroom, the eye catcher is a double bed with a painted headboard – a different theme for each room (Renaissance, Passion, Dreams, Love and Soul...). Antiques like beautifully restored fauteuils, small desks, bedside tables and mirrors are all over the place, and in every little corner you’ll find paraphernalia like dried flowers, framed black-and-white pictures, a straw hat, an antique radio, or a small art-deco object. There are also lots of little ‘extras’ to make you feel pampered – satin sheets, bathrobes and ample supplies of beauty products, soaps and shampoos next to the Jacuzzi baths or showers.
The flair of Hotel Ilion makes it very different from your typical Greek-style hotel, and is a joy for those of you with a taste for the extravagant. It is also perfectly suited to serve as a romantic base from where to explore Nafplio and its surroundings.
Your experiences
* ''We loved the Ilion''
Naflio was one of our very favourite cities - we loved the Ilion and being located in town. Great food, staff and room. Easy day trips to Epidauvros and Mycinae. We were as sorry to leave there as to leave Notos.

* ''Exceptionally friendly''
We had a big laugh about the paintings. Imagine sleeping with your head between a maiden's legs. Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Recommended nice restaurant on the water. It was quite a challenge offloading luggage, trying not to blow petrol fumes in the faces of the people waiting at the restaurant in the street, just down from the hotel steps.
