Situated on the hill outside the little coastal village of Kardamyli, Notos is a charming complex of stone-built houses. Set against the backdrop of the Taigetos mountain range, the area is one of the most scenic in Greece; the coastline is particularly beautiful. It is still relatively undiscovered - the tourists who make it to this out-of-the-way corner of Greece are looking for natural beauty, tranquillity and a few sights rather than beach entertainment and nightlife.

The owners of Notos, Maria Malliri and Giorgos Giannakeas have created a wonderful, peaceful little getaway. Set in well-kept gardens, the houses are lovely to look at, and a quiet and friendly ambience pervades the whole place. There is a total of 14 apartments and open-plan studios, each with a fully equipped kitchen and shaded terrace or veranda. Inside, they look fresh and friendly, pleasant and unpretentious. They are done in an unfussy, tasteful style with soft colours, wooden ceilings, hand-designed (and handmade) pine furniture, and simple, slightly arty decoration and they have a very nice, clean and airy feel, just perfect for uncomplicated holidays.

There is no restaurant on the premises, but you can walk (or drive) down to the beach where Giorgos’ brother runs a charming beachside taverna (Elies). Here you can enjoy some excellent food in the shade of olive trees. In Kardamyli, you should try Lela's taverna, a definite "classic" in the village, run for over twenty years by Giorgos’ mother.

* "Wonderful experiences"
My husband and I had wonderful experiences staying at Heliophos and Notos. Heliophos was so beautiful, peaceful and romantic, a perfect location and we loved the eclectic decor in the atmospheric accommodations. Notos was very comfortable and well-appointed, with easy access to the sea and plentiful sites and activities in an area of spectacular beauty.The yourGreece website was really useful for pointing us to these charming places in the first place and then for allowing us to conveniently book our stays. * "Would return in a heartbeat!"
Probably our favourite in many ways, was Notos in Kardamili.  We really felt comfortable yet well taken care of.  The location is very easy to find, is well designed, and gave us privacy yet connected us to the rest of the hotel and locale.  The room was well equipped with a terrific small kitchen and we could imagine staying there for a week or more.  The taverna owned by the same family in town was also a great experience for our first night in Kardamyli, and we made short day trips to nearby villages, though not really adventurous driving (getting there was a long drive, the toughest part really is from Kalamata to Kardamili).  Would return in a heartbeat!

How to get there
From Kardamyli, drive in the direction of Kalamata. The first kilometre of road is a straight stretch. Just before the road bends to the right, you will see a sign for the hotel to the left. Notos is at the end of this 800-metre dead-end road.

Activities
This is a great destination for relaxing beach holidays. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Mani and its tower-house villages. The area is also excellent for walking and hiking; numerous walking routes are clearly indicated by different coloured marks. They vary from easy half- to one-hour walks in the foothills of the Taigetos Mountains, to more serious hikes, notably the six-hour trek through the Viros Gorge.
