Not far from the capital of the island of Chios is Kambos, a beautiful green and lush area known for its lovely old Genoese mansions. Most of these mansions are used as family homes, often just for the summer, but the 17th century Perleas Mansion is one of very few that have been converted in a guesthouse. Claire and Vangelis Tsisopoulos live in the mansion and, while always discreet, they do everything to give their guests the feeling they are staying in a private home.
The interiors of the mansion are quite amazing. Vangelis is a passionate collector of old objects and you’ll find bits and pieces in every corner – old radios, a jukebox, Mexican marionettes, old typewriters, sewing machines, cameras and even a cinematographic camera that was used in the 1930s in the cinema of Hios. He is an artist and makes fantastic sculptures out of iron and wood. You will sleep either in the main house or in one of two smaller garden houses. The generously proportioned bedrooms are comfortable and nicely appointed with a combination of antiques and old pieces.
The gardens of the Mansion are absolutely wonderful with idyllic terraces partially shaded by enormous pine trees, an elevated pond covered in water lilies, an old well with a mill-like water pump and more than a thousand fruit trees. The variation of fresh juices and homemade jams that accompany your breakfast won’t come as a surprise. Three times per week dinner is served in the garden - a feast of home-cooked traditional dishes prepared with fresh organic produce from the estate. Not to be missed!

How to get there
Follow the road by the sea from the town of Chios towards the airport. Take a right immediately after the airport (at the end of the landing strip) and then take a left towards Kalimasia. Turn into the second (narrow) lane on your left after you pass the BP petrol station. At the end of this lane, on your right, you’ll find the Perleas Mansion.
Activities
Old villages, wild mountains, impressive monasteries, gorgeous beaches, Hios has it all. This is why Hios is not just a summer destination, but it is also a wonderful island to visit in the spring and fall. There is so much to explore. But you should also keep some time to spend at the Perleas Mansion. You can sign up of one of Claire's classes in traditional marmalade production, or participate in the organic farming activities on the estate.
In a very quiet village with rural setting.
