At first glance, nothing distinguishes the majestic Santikos Mansion in Vyzitsa from the other tall, stone mansions the village is famous for. The so-called arhondika were constructed around the 18th century by wealthy merchants, but over the years many fell into disrepair. In the 1970s the Greek government stepped in and started to provide aid for their restoration. Quite a few were subsequently converted into guesthouses, some run by the Greek Tourist Organisation, others run privately, and their interiors varying from sober and traditional to flamboyant and even bordering on the kitsch.
The mansion at the top of the village that was bought a few years ago by the Santikos family was one of those that were run as simple, traditional guesthouses. After it changed ownership, the listed building was transformed into a warm and stylish retreat. Seasoned hoteliers (the family already owned two top-notch island hotels), the Santikos couple considered the mansion their pet-project – a place were they were planning to spend many of their weekends (as indeed they do). They went out of their way to create a décor that would do full justice to the magnificent original features of the mansion. Stylish furniture, upholstery in warm colours and elegantly draped curtains are used to wondrous effect, creating an ambience of tradition mixed with understated luxury.
It is this perfectly executed combination of authentic Pelion style and great comfort that makes the Santikos Mansion unique in the area. It is not just the décor, you can feel it at all levels: local staff is friendly, professional and efficient (but not fluent in English!); breakfast consists of local products, but is prepared with finesse and served with flair (wherever and whenever you want it); beds are traditional wood built-in style, but they are up there with the world’s most comfortable; and from the terrace you will enjoy splendid views to the sea, with soothing music playing in the background. It is not surprising that some guests who came from far in order to explore Pelion using the Santikos Mansion as their base, in the end barely leave the mansion.
