Some 20 years ago, Nikos Saxonis and his wife Poly decided to turn their back on their busy life in Athens and start a whole different way of living in the mountains of Epirus. They took off to Papingo, one of the prettiest villages of the Zagorohoria and restored three 150-year-old village houses, turning them into a small hotel. They meticulously preserved the original character of the stone houses and appointed them in a tasteful and unpretentious style, opting for aesthetics based on local tradition – those of simplicity.

The Saxonis couple came to the Zagorohoria looking for peace and quiet, and that is also what they want to offer to their guests. This is why there is not a single television set in the hotel and no telephones in the bedrooms. Also, families with children are not encouraged to come and stay. But the place is ideal for people who want a few days of total quiet. During the winter, they can sit by the fire in a small sitting room that is stocked with games and magazines. And for warmer days, there is an idyllic terraced garden ablaze with flowers. Breakfast is very much in character with this little garden, with freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs boiled just right and delicious home-baked cake.

How to get there
From Ioannina take the road towards Konitsa. After about 40 km turn right in the direction of Aristi and Papingo. Take a left about 50 m after you enter Megalo Papingo (right after you pass the church). Turn left again and about 80 m further you will find the Saxonis Houses on your right.

If peace and quiet is what you are looking for, you’re in the right place. But this doesn’t mean you should sit still. Close to Megalo Papingo you can also go... Walking with a guide in the Vikos Gorge, Rafting at Kalaritikos and Voidomatis, Trekking at Vradeto.
