Kastoria, a small Macedonian town, enjoys an enchanting setting on the shores of a small peninsula stretching into a magnificent lake. Until recently, the town desperately lacked a nice place to spend the night, but a few years ago, one of the old noble houses was converted into a wonderful small hotel, Vergula's Mansion.

Owner Tasos Sfinarolakis always had a weak spot for the magnificent 150-year-old mansion where he had lived as a schoolboy – it used to be a boarding house. When years later it came up for sale, he bought it and meticulously restored it, leaving all its beautiful old elements intact. He created a warm and refined interior with Asian furniture collected during various travels in the Far East and teakwood pieces he designed himself, mainly in Indonesian style. He chose beautifully simple designs with an exotic touch - a style which blends perfectly with the timeworn elements of the mansion.

The large and comfortable bedrooms are on the two top floors of the mansion – most have a view over the lake. They have style and character (and some have a fireplace you can use), without being too obviously decorated. Tiny showers are tucked away in the old wardrobes.

On the lowest floor there is a cosy dining room. On the menu you’ll find typical Greek dishes, all prepared with ingredients coming straight from the family farm. You may enjoy the choice of background music: mellow jazz and quiet ethnic music in the evenings, and classical music to accompany your fresh-from-the-farm breakfast.

As you enter Kastoria, follow signs for the centre. After you pass the main church you will see a sign for the hotel on your left.

Explore the town, go for walks by the lake, explore the nearby mountains, or visit the old monastery of Taxiarhes. You can also go canoying, rafting.
