Panormos is a charming, historic village not too far from Rethymno. It has remained blissfully laid-back and unspoilt. It is lively enough, and not totally untouched by tourism, but it hasn't lost its character nor its quiet. Some ten years ago, Korinna and Andonis Miliaraki, a bubbly brother and sister team, chose it as the site of their small hotel by renovating a century-old merchant’s house. They managed to create an exquisite little getaway, which feels like a cross between an unpretentious village hotel and an exclusive retreat.

The house itself doesn’t stand out as being much grander than the neighbouring houses and it truly feels as part of the village. But the enclosed garden (with a swimming pool flanked by wooden sun beds, tables set in the shade of a giant pine tree and an abundance of flowers) offers a haven of peace and quiet. This is the perfect spot to relax after a stroll through the livelier part of the village, a swim in the sea, a meal in a local fish taverna or an excursion on the island. Summer mornings, when you can help yourself from a sumptuous buffet and take your breakfast out on the terrace, are absolute bliss.

With only five guestrooms, Villa Kynthia feels very intimate. One small and charming apartment opens up directly onto the garden and is perfect for families. The other four rooms are on the first floor of the house. There are two quite striking suites with wooden floors, beamed or wood-panelled ceilings, some fun murals and gleaming antique furniture. One has a canopied double bed, plush sofas and trompe l’œil wall paintings. The other two first-floor rooms are smaller but they are cosy and comfortable.

This little hotel is a real find!

How to get there
Follow the national road between Iraklion and Rethymno and turn off at the exit for Panormos (about 20 km from Rethymno, or 55 km from Iraklion). You will see signs for Villa Kynthia as you enter the village.

Activities
You are probably going to spend most of your time relaxing by the water and enjoying the village atmosphere, but we recommend that one day you get up early to make the traverse of the famous Samaria gorge.
